How to purchase a short dress

The right short dress is a valuable addition to any woman's wardrobe. A dress just a little higher than your knees can draw attention to a pair of shapely legs, accent your curves and show off your figure. Whether a simple sheath or an eye catching detailed beaded wrap dress, a short dress serves to both highlight and disguise your figure flaws. A dress with an excellent fit and appropriate accessories will be one you can wear nearly anywhere.

Evaluate your body type. Most women fall into one of several body types including apple, pear and hourglass. A short dress should help accentuate your best features and minimize any figure flaws. If you're heavier on top than on bottom choose a short dress with fullness in the rear and neck that draws attention to your face. If you have a lack curves look for dresses that adds to them. A short wrap dress or a dress with a v-neck top will add detail and help create a more rounded shape.

Match the dress to the occasion. A short dress can be worn to a highly formal occasion such as a wedding and still look appropriate. Look for dresses that have details such as beading or a fabric like silk that brings formality to mind. Long sleeves, a sweetheart neckline and even a train help add to the sense of formality you are seeking. A more casual outing such as a Fourth of July picnic is ideal for a sleeveless cotton or draped jersey dress.

Examine the color and print used. A short dress in a single bright splash of color can look quite exuberant and playful. More than two colors may seem overly busy and fussy. Look for subtle prints rather than large scale prints. A small print will blend in rather than overwhelm the dress.

Assess dress details. A shorter dress makes many details more noticeable. A slightly larger than average zipper might go unnoticed in a dress that reaches to the ankles, but will stand out in a shorter dress. Subtle details can help make the dress. Look for dresses that have only a single focus point such as a bow at the neck or bit of lace at the hip. Dresses with multiple details can seem busy and unfocused.

Purchase the right accessories. If the dress already has intricate detail choose to let it serve as the center of attention with neutral shoes and hosiery. A simple dress without a lot of detail will allow you to highlight a rhinestone clutch or favorite piece of jewelry. Match shoes to the dress very carefully. A pair of heels may unexpectedly make the hem fall higher than expected or create hems of differing heights in the back and front.
