The Vietnamese people can be surprisingly accommodating and friendly to American tourists, and the women in particular enjoy relative freedom to interact with tourists. Care must be taken to treat Vietnamese women with respect, especially in regards to strong family ties and religious beliefs.

Respect any specific religious requirements in terms of the treatment of women while you are in Vietnam. Vietnamese women may be Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Muslims or members of a variety of other religions, and you should proceed cautiously until you are aware of the proper way to interact with them. In other words, it's always best to allow the woman to make the first move when it comes to greetings and general conversation.
2Try not to stare at Vietnamese women, even if they are staring at you. You are attracting attention because you are a Westerner, and a relative rarity in their world. By staring back at them, however, you may be sending the message that you are interested in them sexually (if you are a man), or looking down at their social status (if you are a woman).
3Avoid making messes while visiting or staying at the home of a Vietnamese woman. Women in Southeast Asian countries generally take a lot of pride in keeping their homes clean and sanitary, especially their bathrooms. By being careless, you show a great amount of disrespect to the women, and you may be asked to leave.
4Keep any opinion about the way Vietnamese men treat their women to yourself. In Vietnam, men generally do not treat the women as equals, especially in rural or northern areas of the country. While you may find some of these behaviors offensive, you will only be considered rude for bringing it up.
5Stay away from brothels or questionable night clubs while you stay in Vietnam. Prostitution is illegal in Vietnam, and some unsavory characters may try to convince you that the laws are more relaxed in an effort to entrap you. The fines for soliciting prostitutes can be very stiff, and the last place you want to be as an American tourist is in a Vietnamese jail.
