Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that, according to the Mayo Clinic, manifests itself with a red patch of skin that is swollen, tender, warm and is often accompanied by fever. Cellulitis can be quite serious and can sometimes spread to underlying tissue. In other cases the infection is caught quickly and the patient recovers without further incident. The varying degrees of the infection and the varying severity mean that some people come away from cellulitis scar-free while others are left with scar tissue that is highly visible.
Understanding Scars
Scarring is a natural and important process that occurs in nearly all damaged tissue, including tissue damaged by cellulitis. The University of Virginia Health System distinguishes between three types of scars--keloid, hypertrophic and contractures--each of which responds to specific treatments.
Keloid scars are thick, round and sometimes red. The scar extends beyond the boundary of the wound and is a result of a hyper-immune response where the body over-produces scar tissue. Hypertrophic scars are similar in appearance to keloid scars except they stay within the boundary or the wound. Contractures are scars that occur when patches of skin are lost, which can occur with more severe cellutitis infections though is most often a result of a burn. Contracture scar tissue is tight and can grow into muscle tissue.
Treatment Options
Keloid scars respond to cryotherapy (freezing of scar tissue and surgical removal), pressure therapy, surgery and steroid injections. Hypertrophic scars are often treated with a combination of steroids and surgery. Contractures require skin grafts, Z-plasty and tissue expansion.
Skin grafts involve removing the scar and covering the area with new skin, whereas tissue expansion attempts to increase the quantity of tissue that might be used for grafting. Z-plasty, rather than replacing skin or expanding the quantity of skin available, decreases the visibility of the scar by making a Z-shaped incision which will allow the tissue to heal more naturally.
If surgery is required or recommended, it is often done with lasers. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery states that laser surgery has many benefits over scalpel surgery, some of which are a decreased risk of infection, increased precision of cutting, and decreased recovery time.
