How to Get Rid of an Orange Peel

You've repainted your ride and feel proud of the labor and cost savings until you notice puckered streaks in the paint job. That clean finish you envisioned didn't happen, and you've got orange peel, the auto industry's term for a puckered, blotchy paint job. It will take more elbow grease to get rid of an orange peel problem, but you can do it. Depending on the amount of orange peel, the task will be faster or slower, but your car should be in fine shape once you finish.

Instructions

Spray the car with a chemical cleaner. Wipe the cleaner away with a tack cloth, switching cloths when yours gets too wet. If you don't remove dust and debris before you sand off orange peel, you'll only sand those impurities into the car and ruin the paint finish.

Fill a bucket with water. Place wet sandpaper in the bucket. Car Craft recommends 1,500-grit wet sandpaper for light to average orange peel and 1,000- to 1,200-grit wet sandpaper for really heavy orange peel. If only parts of your car have the effect of orange peel, use the 1,500-grit, which is lighter.

Pull the sandpaper out of the bucket. Rub the sandpaper along part of your car that's got an orange peel problem. Move the sandpaper from left to right in one long horizontal stroke, then pick it up. You should always be working in one direction. If you feel resistance, dip the sandpaper back into the bucket to keep it wet.

Rinse off the area you've been working to inspect your progress. Continue working until the paint looks and feels mostly smooth. Aim to make 75 percent progress before moving on to another area. Then repeat the initial sanding on all other parts of your car.

Wet sand your car again with 2,000-grit sandpaper. This finer sandpaper allows you to get the orange peel off so the paint becomes more even. Sand with this sandpaper in the same manner as the heavier grit, and apply water as often as needed.

Dry the car with a tack cloth when you finish sanding. At this point, the paint should be 90 to 95 percent smooth and you should not be able to see orange peel. It will be dull, but you'll fix that.

Tape over metal or rubber areas on the car with masking tape.

Repeat the compounding all over your car to complete the orange peel removal process. Then remove the masking tape.
