Makeup artists and consumers alike have experienced makeup catastrophes such as dropping your eye shadow and watching it break on the floor. The next time catastrophe strikes, do not throw your broken eye shadow away, but gather some basic household items together and create homemade eye shadow palettes. You can also create all-together new looks with some simple tricks from professional makeup artists.
Kits by Color
Makeup bags are often included as a gift with your makeup purchase, so if you have a few makeup bags handy at home, use them to create color kits, suggests Gina Sgambellone, successful southern California hair and makeup artist. Sgambellone, owner and operator of "I Do! Hair & Makeup" in Orange County, recommends putting not just shadows into your color palettes, but also include blushers, lipsticks, lip liners and eye liners into the makeup bags, by color categories, such as pinks and plums, or grays and blues. Zip-lock bags can be used just as well.
Palettes
Carrying makeup in your purse or dropping it often results in crumbling or breaking of eye shadows. Create color palettes by removing the surviving shadows and gathering them together with other similar-colored eye shadows. Remove the shadows from their cases while keeping them inside their metal pots. Glue the shadows to the inside of a CD jewel case to keep them in their color grouping, safe and easy to find.
Broken Shadow
Broken eye shadow should not be discarded, but recycled into new makeup products. Katie Vollmer, owner of "Beauty and the Beach" and a makeup artist for 13 years, loves creating new products from makeup that seems trash-ready. Vollmer says to take broken shadows and put them into empty compacts. Break the shadow into finer powder to apply with a shadow brush. Vollmer also suggests using a weekly pill box container to create palettes with broken shadows.
Tips and Warnings
Create "cream colors" by mixing a small amount of eye cream with your loose eye shadows for a light wash of pigment. Or add a drop of water to your makeup brush before dipping the brush into the powder for a light, summery look. Eyes are a delicate area, though, warns Vollmer. You may be tempted to add lip products to your eye palettes, but unless you are sure the product is clean and you are not allergic, avoid using lip products on eye lids. Also, avoid using blush on your eyes, Vollmer says, because it makes you look tired and sick. Bronzers are usually okay to add to your eye palettes. And add shimmer creams to brighten your eyes.
