How to Remove Newton's Rings in Photoshop

Adobe corporation's flagship product, Photoshop, has many uses, from designing Web page layouts to creating simple animation. But its most frequent use is retouching or repairing photos or other images. For example, photos or scanned images sometimes have a series of concentric lines on them that are know as Newton's Rings. These rings are an interference pattern resulting from light reflecting off two surfaces. This pattern can ruin an image, and is difficult to remove. But it is possible using the tools in Photoshop.

Instructions

Open Photoshop. Select "File" and click "Open." In the dialog box that pops up, browse to the image you want to edit and open it.

Select "Image" from the menu and click "Image Scale." In the dialog that pops up, change the interpolation method at the bottom to "Bicubic Smoother." Increase the pixel width and height of the image. The exact amount will depend on your image. The goal is to make the image large enough that you can easily select and work with the rings. Click "OK."

Click on the "Quick Mask" icon at the bottom of the toolbar. Then select the "Brush" tool and make its size about the same as the width of the rings. You can adjust the size as you work. Now paint over the rings.

Click on the "Quick Mask" icon again. Then select "Select" from the menu and click "Inverse." The rings are now selected.

Select the "Clone Stamp" tool from the toolbar, setting the "Feather" to about 20. Hold down the "ALT" key and click on an area just outside one of the rings to set a reference point for the tool. Now paint over the section of ring nearest the point. Continue this process to remove all the rings. You will have to select new reference points as you work.

Select "File" and click "Save As." In the dialog that pops up, name your file and save it as a high-resolution JPEG.
