Natural Ways to Reduce Fluid Retention

Reduce Salt (Sodium) Intake

Avoid caffeine and alcohol."

    If eating on the run is a must, try to order more vegetables and less fried food. For example, a salad would be a better option versus ordering fries or fried chicken. Watch portion sizes, too --- or save some of your meal for later.

Drink Water

    Although drinking lots of water when you are dealing with water retention may seem counterintuitive, it's actually what your body needs. Often water retention can be a sign of dehydration. In order to prevent being dehydrated, drink several glasses of water each day.

    Nutritional approaches are often effective. For example, try to eat a banana each day. Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps banish fluid retention. You could also try drinking cranberry juice, a natural diuretic. To reap the most benefit, drink it unsweetened or combined with sparkling water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which tend to dehydrate the body and thus promote fluid retention.

Check Your Medications

    Many medications and medical conditions can cause fluid retention. Kidney disease, heart failure and hypothyroidism all cause water retention. If you experience persistent water retention, let a doctor rule out serious medical problems.
