Dry skin on the legs is not uncommon and usually isn't serious. That doesn't mean, however, that it can't be annoying. Left untreated, dry skin can develop into a more serious skin condition. Luckily, most dry skin can be prevented or reversed by changing a few skin-care habits.
Moisturize
Using a moisturizer is a great way to seal moisture into your skin and prevent excess dryness. The experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest a thick over-the-counter moisturizer, such as Eucerin or Cetaphil. For extremely dry skin, baby oil provides a better barrier against moisture evaporating from your skin. For moisturizers or oils to be most effective, use them promptly after drying off from a bath or shower. Also, be sure to pat your skin dry as excessive rubbing may worsen the dryness of your skin.
Keeping the air in your home moist is another great tip to prevent dry skin. Check your local drugstore for a variety of humidifiers for your home, ranging in size and price. Follow the manufacturers' instructions for optimal results.
Bathing
Many people enjoy long, hot, steamy showers, especially in the winter, as a way to relax and warm up after a cold day. However, this is not recommended for your skin as hot water and longer bathing time can strip your skin of oils essential to combatting the drier air. Try using warm water instead of hot and limit your exposure to 15 minutes.
Soap
Using a soap that contains moisturizers can be effective in the fight against dry skin. The Mayo Clinic experts recommend a mild soap with added oils or fats, namely Neutrogena and Dove. They suggest trying a few soaps until you find one that fits; they also say that "a good rule of thumb is that your skin should feel soft and smooth after cleansing, never tight or dry." Soaps containing deodorants or antibacterial ingredients tend to be harsher than those without.
Clothing
Wear clothing made of natural materials, such as cotton and silk. If your pants are too tight, they may be rubbing your thighs and increasing the dryness and irritation, so wear loose-fitting pants or skirts. Also, many people with sensitive skin have found that washing their clothing with detergents that containdyes and perfumes can further irritate their skin as well, so choose your detergent wisely.
Medicines As Treatment
If all else fails, your doctor may recommend that you begin using an over-the counter cream containing lactic acid or lactic acid and urea. Or your doctor may decide that you have a more-serious skin disease, such as psoriasis, and will most likely give you a prescription for a cream or ointment to use in addition to proper skin care at home. In cases where dermatitis has developed (red, itchy skin) your doctor may also suggest using a lotion that contains hydrocortisone (at least 1 percent according to the Mayo Clinic website). If you feel that proper precautions and treatment at home aren't working, contact your doctor to see if she recommends one of these treatments.
