Psoriasis is a chronic disease that affects many people. With psoriasis, your skin cells don't follow the normal life cycle of cells. Instead, they build up, forming scaly patches that itch. You might also develop dry, red patches during flare-ups. When it comes to treating psoriasis symptoms, a technique, sometimes called the Lewis technique, can help relieve itchiness and soften your skin.

Trap in Moisture

The Lewis technique is a type of occlusion treatment. Using occlusion to treat psoriasis involves applying a topical ointment or moisturizer to the affected area and then wrapping it with plastic wrap.

With the Lewis technique, you wrap the affected area in a damp cloth and then cover it with plastic wrap. For the feet, put on damp socks and then slip plastic bags over your feet and tie the bags closed at each ankle. For the hands, use damp cotton gloves covered by surgical gloves.

The damp cloth brings moisture to the skin, which will help to soften the dry patches, relieving the itchiness and redness of the area. The plastic wrap is optional, but can make this treatment more convenient--you won't get everything you come in contact with damp.

Topical Ointments

Occlusion treatments like the Lewis technique usually involve a prescription ointment or over-the-counter moisturizer as well. Before wrapping the affected area in damp cloth, you first soak it in warm water to begin softening the skin. Depending on the area you plan to treat, this might mean soaking in the tub for 15 to 20 minutes. Once the skin is softened, apply a topical ointment or moisturizer before wrapping the area.

Researchers from the University of Michigan Department of Dermatology tested the effectiveness of occlusion therapy. They found that combining a topical corticosteroid cream with occlusion produced better results than occlusion without the cream or than the cream by itself.

Safety Considerations

Occlusion treatments like the Lewis technique dramatically increase the potency of the topical cream you are using. This increases the cream's effectiveness, but also increases the risk of side effects. You should talk with your dermatologist before using any prescription creams or even over-the-counter medicated creams for the Lewis technique or any other occlusion treatment. Some prescription creams like Dovenex are not safe for occlusion.

If you are treating a psoriasis flare-up on your feet, be very careful when walking with plastic bags on your feet. It's easy to slip and fall.
