Many people, particularly women, gain weight as they age. In many cases fat is stored around the abdomen. A low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet is key to overall weight loss, but exercise is required to deal with abdominal fat. The following exercises will reduce fat around your waist quickly.

Aerobic Exercise

    Spot exercises will firm the muscles underneath belly fat, but they won't reduce the belly itself. To do that, you must engage in aerobic exercise that burns a lot of calories and creates a lot of muscle.
    Muscles burn calories much faster than other types of cells in the body. An athlete may need to eat 3,000-5,000 calories a day in order to retain her muscle mass. Athletes can eat so much because their muscles burn thousands of calories a day even when they are sitting still.
    The largest muscles in your body are in your legs. Aerobic exercise that targets the legs and butt as well as the abdomen is critical. An hour of aerobic exercise, ranging from tennis and racquetball to running or dance, four times a week, creates the conditions required to lose belly fat.

Crunches

    Almost everyone learned how to do crunches in high school. But you may not have learned how to do them correctly. Lie on your back, fold your arms over your chest, or clasp your hands behind your neck, then move your chest toward your knees. Keep your back straight and your belly flat. Repeat this exercise as much as 10 times. Repeat this set of exercises three or four times a day.
    To work the side muscles of the abdominal region, perform the crunch again only this time move the right elbow toward the left knee. Repeat the crunch once more and move the left elbow toward the right knee.
    Note that these exercises can be hard on your back. If you experience any back pain doing these exercises or any other abdominal exercise, see a doctor or physical therapist for help.
    Nothing makes it harder to lose weight than not being able to exercise. So treat any injuries you have early.

Weights

    There are many muscles of the belly. They wrap your abdomen in several interlocking and overlapping bands of muscle. Creating a very small, very strong, very compact belly eventually means being able to target and work all these muscle groups with maximum effectiveness. To do this, you need to use weights. This is one reason you rarely see six pack abs outside bodybuilder competitions.

Losing Belly Fat Takes Months

    Although you can achieve some belly fat reduction quickly with the right diet and exercise, getting a really attractive belly can take months of focus. This means you shouldn't feel disappointed if you can't get the results you want in just a couple of weeks. Dedicate yourself to doing all you can do, and enjoy a flatter belly every day.
