Purchase either a tan enhancing tanning bed lotion from your certified tanning facility, or a broad-spectrum outdoor tanning oil with a minimum SPF 15 from a local retailer. SPF tanning oil and specialty tanning bed lotions should be applied all over the body and face 15 minutes before UV exposure.
2Create a light base tan by tanning in a bed every other day for a week, with each session gradually increasing from around 10 minutes, up to 18 minutes. If using a tanning bed isn't your thing, throw on a bathing suit and relax in the sun for one hour, flipping from your back to your stomach at the 30-minute mark, every other day -- for a week.
3Build your color with regular UV sessions in the sun, or a tanning bed over the next two weeks. Achieving this by spending 15 minutes every three days in a tanning bed may be less time consuming than building color by spending an hour outside every day, but it can get expensive.
4Deepen your tan during the last week of the month with tanning 18 to 20-minute bed sessions every 24 to 48 hours and 1 to 2 hour daily sessions in the sun.
