How to Care for an Afro With Relaxed Thinning Hair

Unhealthy hair maintenance will create hassle in styling your Afro and create hair breakage. Relaxed hair is hair that is naturally curly or kinky that is chemically straightened, and an Afro consists of curly or kinky hair. Maintaining a healthy Afro with partial relaxed hair while transitioning to your natural hair state can be very difficult. There are numerous ways to help get partial relaxed hair healthy and prevent thinning.

Instructions

    1

Trim all relaxed hair off. Keep your hair that is not relaxed. This will allow your hair to grow quicker and fuller so you can have the full shape of an Afro. Relaxed hair makes your hair straight. If your hair is transitioning from relaxed to natural hair, then some of your hair will be straighter than the other hair. This causes your hair to tangle and leads to breakage, so cut the relaxed hair.

    2

Find the right hair care products that will best benefit your hair texture. Having the right hair products will help your Afro maintain shine, length and thickness. If your hair is really dry, get products that help maintain moisture. Cocoa butter, shea butter and aloe vera are a few products that help provide nutrients to the hair and prevent hair breakage. Also, let your hair air dry after washing. This will retain moisture in your hair. Try a good leavein conditioner or a hot oil treatment for dry hair.

    3

Limit the amount of heat that you use on your hair daily. This will help decrease your hair from thinning and make your Afro look healthy. Excessive heat will cause split ends and can fry hair.

    4

Trim your ends. Thin hair can be due to split ends.Trimming your dead ends will keep your hair at an even and healthy length. Trimming dead ends also will make a thicker Afro.

    5

Eat healthy. Eat a balanced diet involving tons of vitamins and proteins. A poor diet will cause your Afro to be thin. Your hair needs nutrients to help retain strength and growth. Drinking plenty of water carries the nutrients throughout the body and to your hair.

    6

Purchase a big tooth comb. Using a small comb to pick out your Afro will cause your hair to break.

    7

Avoid hairstyles that cause tension to the scalp. Tightly done hairstyles such as braids, weaves and ponytails tug at the scalp and cause permanent hair loss and hair thinning. Protective hairstyles, such as braids, weaves and twists are good for hair growth only if they are not tight against to your scalp and you create time to let your real hair breathe.

    8

Sleep with a satin scarf. Cotton scarfs create friction with hair and causes hair damage. Satan scarfs maintain moisture.
