Aesthetic Laser Training

It would be difficult to walk into a day spa these days without finding a menu of laser treatments available. The growing technology of laser therapy has led to a number of aesthetic treatments to rejuvenate skin, reduce hair growth, improve acne and even smooth out varicose veins and cellulite. Those entering into this popular industry must receive formal training and understand the purpose and technique of the laser.

According to the Rocky Mountain Laser College, the aesthetic laser industry earned more than $5 billion in treatments and services last year. This represented over 8 million treatments performed in day spas, laser centers, hair salons and even at-home aesthetic boutiques.

A trained laser tech is called a CLS, or Certified Laser Specialist. According to Laser Spa Group, a CLS can make $14 to $25 per hour combined with incentives and commission for actual treatments performed. A CLS can work in a doctor's office, day spa, laser center, or even become self-employed by renting a booth in a salon or building a home service in conjunction with an overseeing physician. Most laser services must be performed under the direction and license of a medical doctor.

There are several areas of training that a CLS must receive. Cosmetic laser training teaches the student the safety procedures, skills and techniques surrounding fotofacials, wrinkle removal, skin resurfacing and even teeth whitening. Medical laser training focuses on tattoo removal, hair removal, cellulite reduction, vein and spider vein removal, and laser liposuction.

Most laser training centers offer single courses focusing on individual laser treatments, or a complete training package that includes certification as a laser specialist. The complete program takes about four to six full days. Students will learn safety, technique and the specific functions of various aesthetic lasers.

Becoming a CLS can be an expensive investment. At Rocky Mounter Laser Center, the complete weeklong laser training requires a $6,000 tuition, which covers accommodations near their Denver, Colorado center. However, NOVA Laser Training in Virginia offers a CLS course for $2,000, so be sure to shop around for training facilities near you, or those who provide accommodations as part of their tuition package.

The National Council on Laser Excellence, or NCLE, is a non-profit organization that specializing in medical laser training.
