Large calf muscles stem from genetics, a lack of exercise or the fat content of your diet, and sometimes from a combination of all three. There are natural and surgical ways to reduce the size of your calf muscle.

Calf Muscle Reduction Exercises

Reducing your calf muscle with exercise will take more time and effort than a surgical option. This method, however, is inexpensive and has less risk involved. Exercise will also improve your overall physical fitness.
Start with calf stretches. These will decrease the chance of injury and prevent bulking up in the calf muscle. Stand with your palms touching the wall with your feet together. Step back with one leg and keep the front leg bent with your knee over your ankle. Step back as far you need to in order to feel a stretch in your gastrocnemius muscle in your calf. Bend the back knee to stretch the soleus muscle of the calf.
Use high repetitions and lighter weights during strength-training sessions. Try doing calf raises with little or no weight, which should tone and shrink your calf muscles. Avoid doing low repetitions with heavier weights because that will add size to your calf muscles.
Incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your fitness program. Cardio is great for burning fat and will not result in bulky muscles. Couple the cardio with a high- fiber and low-protein diet to boost your calf muscle reduction rate. Try running, walking, swimming and cycling.
Get involved in exercises that will lengthen and thin your calf muscles. Pilates and yoga are great for toning and lengthening calf muscles.

Surgical Calf Muscle Reduction

Surgical options are more expensive methods for calf muscle reduction. "...First of all, this program is a whole lot about having the proper advice on the problem of cellulite, or in my scenario, orange skin behind. When you register to the 'Kick-Butt Cellulite Redux' package you'll also receive 'The Cellulite Reduction Report.' Atlas, a credentialed personal instructor and actual fitness professional. This report has in-depth information on the most recent cellulite reduction scams making the rounds, and saved me from spending money on the uncomfortable Lypomassage treatment stores that just sprouted up where I live...". Surgery offers the benefit of faster results.
Calf liposuction will remove any fat from the back of the lower leg. The calf muscle usually does not have a high fat content and the results can be minimal.
There are surgical options that remove the calf muscle or parts of the muscle. Total excision of the medial gastrocnemius results in complete removal of the calf muscle and you will sacrifice all function of this area. Partial gastrocnemius muscle reduction removes parts of the calf muscle piece by piece with 3cm to 7cm reductions immediately after surgery (see References).

Selective neurectomy cuts off the nerves that control the calf muscle to cause death in certain parts of the muscle. Another similar option is radio frequency selective neurectomy. This type of procedure involves killing part of the muscle tissue with radio frequency in order to reduce size.
