G5 Cellulite Treatment

G5 massage modalities were developed and patented by former Renault engineer Henri Cuinier in Mermande, France, in 1957. A line of brand name G5 products is produced and distributed by General Physiotherapy, Inc. based in St. Louis, Missouri and sister company Physiotherapie Generale France based in Casteljaloux, France. These G5 mechanical deep message and percussion devices are used for the therapeutic treatment of a number of conditions that include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sports injuries, back pain and cellulite reduction.

The G5 Cellutec

The device marketed by General Physiotherapy (GP) for the specific purpose of cellulite reduction is the G5 Cellutec. The Cellutec is a hand-held device connected by tube to a display panel with control dial atop a 44-inch castor stand, and accessory tray at mid-level, and five wheels at the base. The product brochure indicates the weight of the assembled device to be 25 lbs.

GP describes the G5 Cellutec as a non-invasive mechanical message therapy modality device with an output speed of 20 to 60 cycles per second. The applicator is simply placed on the skin at the area of treatment and held there, and the cycles exert parallel and vertical forces to produce deep tissue mobilization, oscillation, percussion, skin layer resonation, compression and kneading. GP claims that in addition to reducing cellulite, the Cellutec also aids in muscle relaxation, lymphatic drainage, skin toning, exfoliation and body contouring. "...At first, this program is significantly regarding obtaining the suitable details on the difficulty of cellulite, or in my condition, orange skin behind. When you subscribe to the 'Kick-Butt Cellulite Redux' package you'll also receive 'The Cellulite Reduction Report.' Atlas, a credentialed personal trainer and actual fitness qualified. This report has in-depth information on the latest cellulite reduction scams doing the rounds, and saved me from throwing away money on the hurtful Lypomassage treatment centers that just sprouted up where I live...". However, the company does not back its claims with clinical research.

Clinical Research

A 2001 study by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, explored the effects of deep mechanical massage as a treatment for cellulite reduction and the contouring of subcutaneous fat in the porcine model. The researchers observed a significant reduction in tissue forces after the treatments that showed that it was an effective therapy for the treatment of cellulite, but its efficacy was dependent on the technique used by the operator of the deep mechanical message device. In other words, the therapy has the potential to work, but how the device is used is a factor in its effectiveness.

A 2009 study by the Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at Hacettepe University in Turkey compared three techniques for treating cellulite in a group of 60 women. The treatments were mechanical massage, connective tissue manipulation and manual lymphatic drainage. They found that all three techniques were effective in decreasing subcutaneous fats in patients with cellulite. Mechanical massage was most effective in decreasing fat thickness in the abdomen and suprailium, while connective tissue manipulation was the least effective. However, in the reduction of thigh circumference, mechanical massage was the least effective and connective tissue manipulation was the most effective.
