Many women dread summer coming because they feel self-conscious in a bathing suit. If you have had children, you may feel your body is less than attractive because of stretch marks and a sagging tummy. One of the best ways to lift your spirits and boost your confidence level is to treat yourself to a new bathing suit that flatters your figure. Don't choose a style just because it's popular, as it may not look good on you. Remember that the men in your life wear swimsuits, too. With so many styles of bathing suits on the market, there's one that will flatter most any figure.

Check your body in a full-length mirror. Every woman has body parts that she feels self-conscious about no matter how attractive she is. It may be a big tummy from bearing children or stretch marks from pregnancy. She may have a beautiful face, but a boyish figure. Size up your flaws and decide which areas you want to emphasize and which ones to draw attention away from, such as large hips or a large bust.
2Determine your body shape. There are four body shapes, including hourglass, pear, apple and triangle. An hourglass shape is one where the shoulders are even with the hips and the waist is narrower. A pear-shaped body is wider at the hips and smaller at the shoulders. An apple shape is even in the shoulders, hips and waist. And the triangle shape is wider on top and narrower at the hips. You can determine body shape by stripping down and looking at your shape in a mirror.
3Try on several styles and colors to get an idea of what looks good on you. Women with an hourglass figure can wear many styles. Pear shapes can minimize a heavy bottom with a tankini-style suit with a skirted bottom or wear a pareo tied at the hip.
Skirted bottoms conceal heavy thighs and wide hips. Make short legs appear longer by choosing a suit with a higher cut on the legs. Fashion consultant Liria Mersini, interviewed for "Today" Fashion and Beauty, suggests pairing a tankini top with a pareo to flatter a pear shape.
4Minimize a big bust by choosing halter-style suits with wide straps in a one-piece suit or tankini. Dark colors make things look smaller, while light colors make things appear larger. For a small bust, choose a light color on top with a semi-padded or demi-cup top. This accentuates the bust and makes it appear larger. Use light colors and patterns to emphasize features and darker colors without patterns to de-emphasize larger ones.
5Hide a bigger tummy with a tankini suit that has a fuller top that flows over the bottom to hide the tummy without stretching over it. One piece suits with a crisscross pattern over the tummy area also work well. Draw attention away from the tummy with ruffles or patterns on the top of the suit.

Discover your body type. Most men fall into one of these descriptions: Tall and thin, height/weight proportionate, shorter with muscular or slightly heavy build. Board shorts look the best worn by men who are tall and thin or those with a small build. These are typically long, reaching to the knee or just above it.

8Go for less coverage if you visit the gym regularly. Bikini or Speedo-type swimsuits look great on guys that are in good shape, because they draw attention to the hips, butt and crotch areas. While these suits are the most revealing, next to a thong-type suit, the style does offer the most support.
9Be daring and go all out. Thong-type suits are best worn my someone who is in great shape and is comfortable with his body. This suit has the least amount of coverage, but if you are in good physical shape, your girlfriend will love how you look in it. This type of suit may not be appropriate for a public beach where children are present, as the butt area is completely exposed.
