How to Make Seaweed Solution

Seaweed is full of minerals and vitamins that are beneficial to plants and soil. You can use seaweed to make a solution that you can use as an organic plant food supplement. Utilizing organic, rather than chemical, supplements, such as a seaweed solution, helps to protect the ecosystem. Seaweed solution helps with seed germination, boosts the nutritional content of fruits and vegetables and strengthens plants' immune systems and their abilities to resist diseases.

Instructions

Collect seaweed that has washed ashore if you live on the beach. This is the freshest, healthiest seaweed. You can purchase seaweed at Chinese or health food markets. You can also purchase seaweed extract or seaweed organic fertilizer powder from some lawn and gardening supply companies.

Rinse off the collected seaweed with water.

Combine the seaweed with water in a bin with a lid. Use two to three hearty handfuls of seaweed per five gallons of water. Place the covered bin outside in a dry, protected area. If you're using the extract, use 1 1/2 tbsp. of extract per gallon of water. If you're using the seaweed organic fertilizer powder, use 1/4 lb. of fertilizer powder per gallon of water.

Let the seaweed and water sit for one to two months or until the seaweed has largely decomposed and the water has turned brown. (It will be a bit stinky.) Stir periodically throughout. If you're using the seaweed organic fertilizer powder, let the fertilizer powder steep for two days.

Strain the decomposed seaweed from the water. This is your seaweed solution.
