Massage tools have been part of human culture throughout the ages. Different massage tools have been used to diminish the wear and tear on massage therapists' hands and to enrich the massage experience. The earliest massage tools are still used today. The devices are applied to the body to work out muscle knots and relieve aches and pains, while providing relief for the hands applying them.
Massage Stones
Practitioners of stone massage therapy claim the healing powers of massage stones improve physical and spiritual balance. Warm stones increase the heart rate, respiration, metabolism and elimination. The benefits of cold stones are the decongestion of certain areas, hyperstimulation and the production of constrictive action in the tissues.
Massage Cups
Cupping is the use of glass cups, held by suction, to massage the body. Cupping originated from different indigenous peoples using hollow animal horns to drain toxins out of snakebites and skin infections. Bamboo cups replaced the horns around the turn of the 20th century, and now glass cups are commonly used. Cupping is used to drain fluid and stimulate the release of stubborn muscle knots and tension. According to Susan Salvo, author of "Massage Therapy: Principles and Practice," cupping can also be used for fibromyalgia, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, cellulite and a sluggish colon.
Bamboo Sticks
Bamboo massage is a modality that uses bamboo sticks of different lengths and diameters for deep tissue work. The sticks stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage. The therapist also benefits from using the bamboo sticks because they lessen the wear and tear on the therapist's hands and fingers. Bamboo sticks are typically warmed in a special heating pad before a session and may be used in conjunction with the Chinese five elements theory consisting of wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
Bongers Massage Tools
Bongers are excellent for relieving tension in the client's neck and shoulder area. The tools originate from traditional Japanese massage tools and are used to activate circulation and increase collagen production. Bongers are also used to strengthen the therapist's arms and shoulders; holding the device vertically and wobbling the ball left to right while keeping the arms rigid works the shoulder muscles. Moving the ball toward and away from the body exercises the triceps and arms. This massage tool weighs 1 pound, is 11 1/2 inches long and is sold in pairs.
