Certified Medical Laser Technician Training

Certified laser technicians perform cosmetic procedures using laser equipment, including removal of cellulite, tattoos and unwanted hair. They may also perform skin enhancement procedures such as skin rejuvenation, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor projects a 38 percent increase in job opportunities between 2008 and 2018.

Requirements

Candidates can complete certified laser technician training requirements through vocational programs or community colleges. Some schools restrict enrollment to nurses, cosmetologists or licensed aestheticians. The American National Standard Institute (ANSI) requires facilities to have a laser safety officer oversee laser technicians and coordinate the laser program.

Certification

The National Council on Laser Excellence (NCLE) offers certification after successful completion of an accredited training program. Applicants must also have clinical experience and pass a written examination. Some vocational schools or colleges include the NCLE certification examination as part of the core curriculum.

Licensing

Some states require laser technician licensing and registration, while others may require nursing degrees. Students should evaluate licensing requirements in the state prior to school enrollment.
