Phytoplankton blooms are communities of microorganisms that flourish in both marine and freshwater environments. The plankton are important food sources for water habitats, but they also hold value as therapeutic agents in skin care products. Skin care products that contain marine phytoplankton claim to alleviate cellulite, rejuvenate skin or act as natural sunscreens. These products are used in professional spas and at home. But at the time of publication, phytoplankton in its natural state, or not blended into a skin care recipe, is only available as a food for aquarium pets.
Instructions
- 1
Find a phytoplankton skin care product that is suitable for your skin type. Test a sample of each product on a small section of skin before purchasing it. Product samples are available through the manufacturers or from a local spa that uses phytoplankton products.
2Wash your skin with soap and warm water to remove natural oils and make a clean surface for the phytoplankton to do their restorative work.
3Apply the phytoplankton product to your skin. Adjust the amount of product you use to the area of the body -- for example, 1 teaspoon for both legs. A little goes a long way, so begin with a small amount and add more only if you need it.
4Wait 20 minutes, then rinse. This only applies if you are using a mask or scrub product. Lotions are absorbed into the skin and cleansers will rinse off.
5Repeat phytoplankton skin therapy three times a week. Some products are safe for everyday use, such as cleansers and sunscreens, but limit the use of more abrasive products.
