Carboxytherapy for Stretch Marks

Carboxytherapy is an outpatient cosmetic procedure for treating a variety of skin conditions, including stretch marks, cellulite and dark circles under the eyes, as well as for fat sculpting. The treatment is based on the constant exchange of oxygen to replace carbon dioxide in the human body.

Procedure

Carboxytherapy involves injecting carbon dioxide gas under and into the lower layers of the skin, according to the website Carboxytherapy. Injecting carbon dioxide causes the body to increase oxygen flow to the area to remove the carbon dioxide. Increasing the flow of oxygen to the damaged area starts the healing process.

Theory

Stretch marks, according to the website Carboxytherapy, occur when collagen in the dermal (middle) layer of the skin ruptures and breaks down due to stretching of the skin during pregnancy and other events that lead to weight gain. The collagen breakdown leaves wide bands of unsightly, discolored and wrinkled skin, which some studies describe as scar tissue. "...First of all, this system is a lot about having the right advice on the issue of cellulite, or in my condition, orange skin behind. When you sign up to the 'Kick-Butt Cellulite Redux' package you'll also receive 'The Cellulite Reduction Report.' Atlas, a credentialed personal trainer and actual fitness experienced. This report has in-depth information on the most recent cellulite reduction scams doing the rounds, and kept me from throwing away money on the uncomfortable Lypomassage treatment stores that just sprouted up where I live...". Newly formed stretch marks, or striae, are reddish-colored. Older striae are whitish. Carboxytherapy reduces the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating the formation of new collagen in the dermal layer of the skin.

Treatments

Carboxytherapy treatments, according to the website Carboxytherapy, do not hurt but do feel "a little weird." The patient may feel some pressure as the carbon dioxide is injected and expands the stretch marks, and the stretch marks could feel a little itchy. Both effects lessen within about five minutes. Because scar tissue does not contain nerves, the treatment is painless when it is used to treat stretch marks. A series of treatments is usually required.

Side-Effects

Bruising at the injection site is the only common side-effect of carboxytherapy, according to the website Carboxytherapy, which states further that there are no known risks for the procedures.

History

The procedure was invented at the Royal Spas of France in the early 20th century to treat peripheral arterial occlusive diseases caused by blockages in the large arteries of the arms and legs. Practitioners in Europe and South America extended the therapy to treat skin conditions such as stretch marks. The process is used in the United States today to reduce stretch marks and for other purposes, though it has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for such treatments, according to the Physicians Coalition for Injectable Safety. Nor, says the same source, have any clinical trials proved the treatment is effective.
