Carboxytherapy for Stretch Marks

Carboxytherapy is an outpatient cosmetic procedure for treating a variety of skin conditions, including stretch marks, cellulite and dark circles under the eyes, as well as for fat sculpting. The treatment is based on the constant exchange of oxygen to replace carbon dioxide in the human body.

Carboxytherapy involves injecting carbon dioxide gas under and into the lower layers of the skin, according to the website Carboxytherapy. Injecting carbon dioxide causes the body to increase oxygen flow to the area to remove the carbon dioxide. Increasing the flow of oxygen to the damaged area starts the healing process.

Stretch marks, according to the website Carboxytherapy, occur when collagen in the dermal (middle) layer of the skin ruptures and breaks down due to stretching of the skin during pregnancy and other events that lead to weight gain. The collagen breakdown leaves wide bands of unsightly, discolored and wrinkled skin, which some studies describe as scar tissue.
