How to Get Rid of Vinca

Vinca is a type of Periwinkle that many people find quite invasive and almost impossible to control. Vinca can crowd out all other plants and completely take over a garden or even an entire yard in just a couple of growing seasons. Digging it up does no good as even a small amount of root will start the entire process over again. Killing Vinca can be a long process and can require vigilance on your part--but the good news is, you can win this war.

Instructions

Cut the Vinca down to ground level. Use a weed whacker or other means to cut the plant down to the surface of the ground.

Lay down pieces of cardboard. Overlap the edges of the cardboard by 12 inches. Cover the entire area where the Vinca is growing with the cardboard.

Spray the cardboard with water. The idea is to create a barrier to light and air.

Cover the cardboard with three inches of mulch and bark. Sprinkle the entire area until wet. Add one inch of soil.

Plant other plants or ground cover over the area.

Look for any shoots of Vinca that may somehow push their way through the wet cardboard. Clip them immediately to deprive the plant of any air or light.
